50ft Hatteras “Boat Time”
50ft Hatteras, twin Detroit 8V92 two-stroke · Horizon Shores Marina
The owner of ‘Boat Time’, a 50ft Hatteras running twin Detroit 8V92 two-strokes, booked her in for what started out as a routine saltwater service. Once we were into the job it became clear the vessel was overdue for some real attention on the raw water side and a handful of ancillaries that had quietly gone past their use-by.
Working through both engines we found tired turbos on the port side, aged raw water pumps port and starboard, cracked and perished saltwater hosing, thermostats that were well past their prime, a leaking fuel shutoff solenoid on the starboard engine, and wet exhaust piping on the port side that needed to come out and be replaced before it caused any bigger problems.
Every finding was reported back to the owner with photos and a plan. From there we worked methodically through the list, replaced everything that needed replacing, rebuilt and cleaned the Racor fuel/water separator housings, ran chemical coolant flushes through both engines, and carried out a major overhaul so the old girl felt tight and honest again.
Once she was buttoned back up we commissioned both mains and took her out for a full sea trial. Temps sat exactly where they should, both engines pulled cleanly through the rev range, and she came home running better than she has in years.
